Meeting time & place

The Red Barons meet at The Walker Ground. Our sessions run from 19:30 to 21:30 every Thursday during the year, except for the main school holidays – Easter, Summer and Christmas.

The address is The Walker Ground, 175 Waterfall Rd, London, N14 7JZ.

During the term, we may meet at other venues, such as Scout Park in Bounds Green, Broomfield Park or the location of an activity we are taking part in. This will be indicated in the programme, as well as reminder emails prior to meetings!

What Do We Stand For?

The Red Barons Unit is fully inclusive, and we share in each other’s achievements.

The unit is welcoming and is made up of individuals encompassing many races, abilities, faiths, sexual orientations and economic backgrounds. We do all we can to ensure that those who want to take part in Scouting, have an opportunity to do so.

Explorers with additional needs are also well looked after. We speak with all concerned, including parents, carers, or even the Explorer themselves, in order to ensure everything is in place for them to be able to take part in Scouting.

The Unit firmly believes that the cost of Scouting should not stand in the way of an Explorer taking part in meetings, activities, events or camps. We will do everything we can to ensure that there are no barriers to a young adult joining us on our adventures, and we will always be available to listen and support on an individual basis.

Choosing Our Identity

Our Summer Camp to Scotland in 2017 was shared with another ESU based in Southgate called the Hatters. Some of the Palmers Green Explorers started to theorise who would win in different fight scenarios, consisting of mainly fictional and cartoon characters, ranging from Goku to Superman to Chuck Norris (of course).

When one Explorer pitted a powerful character against Stuart Little, everyone was in total agreement that Stuart would come out the victor. The remaining Explorers suggested stronger and stronger opponents, with the little mouse coming up trumps every time. When they eventually found someone who could match him, they transformed Stuart into the version that flew his aeroplane in the Stuart Little 2 film. This of course gave Mr. Little the ultimate edge, and he was crowned the victor in all pairings going forward. For this guise, he was dubbed ‘Stuart Little as the Red Baron’.

In the Autumn Term after the camp, we decided to pitch for new names for the Unit. As you can imagine, the Explorers were unanimous in their decision to call the Unit the ‘Red Barons.’

It is often a source of amusement when this story is retold as it does sound rather silly. However, the name was perfect as it totally summed up the camp discussions and feelings at the time. It was relevant to and voted for by the Explorers; it was lasting enough to hold firm even when they left and above all, had a sense of fun about it.
